Looking at dahlias can calm us down.
Ball shaped dahlias in particular are a great example of fractal patterns in nature. Absorbing yourself in fractals, the repetitive patterns often seen in nature, can help to reduce acute stress, according to research by psychologists from Lund University in Sweden and the University of Oregon. When we study fractals it produces an increase of alpha wave frequency in the frontal areas of the brain, promoting feelings of calm and wellbeing, researchers have shown. "Our eyes have evolved to process fractal patterns easily," says the psychologist Dr Katie Cooper, the author of Plant Therapy (Hardie Grant). "Plenty of studies show that looking at fractal patterns puts us at ease and can have an immediate stress-reducing effect."
Like most of my flower portraits this image is focus stacked for maximum definition. This one is blended from 35 shots at slightly different focal points.
Archival pigment prints are made on smooth matt Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 gsm heavyweight art paper.
