One of my home-grown 'black' tulips in a pink glass vase from a series of Parrot tulips in hand blown glass. These photographs share the twinned motifs of the flowers and the coloured glass in order to link them together into a cohesive series. I am drawn to the sculptural and tactile qualities of both. They are inspired by the luminosity and precise compositions of the 17th century Dutch still life painters. Fittingly, these tulips were grown from bulbs imported from Holland.

During the 1600's tulips were so fashionable in Holland that the price of the bulbs skyrocketed. At the peak of “tulip mania” they were worth more than gold. It is generally considered to have been the first recorded speculative bubble or asset bubble in history.

Archival pigment print on smooth matt Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 gsm heavyweight art paper.
