My first homegrown Iris (summer 2024) and it produced just one small flower! She may be small but she does have a certain devil-may-care panache. She just knows she is rather fabulous, as she throws her purple silk designer scarf over her shoulder.

I like to think that my flower portraits express a bit of personality. That’s why I call them portraits.

This small and delicate Iris is native to Central and Eastern Europe and has been cultivated in Britain since the 16th century. Traditionally the purple iris represents royalty, but purple can also represent wisdom or respect. In any case, it is a powerful colour!

This image is focus-stacked from 50 shots at different focal points for enhanced clarity and depth of field at large print sizes.

Archival pigment print on smooth matt Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 gsm heavyweight art paper.
