This image is created from time-lapse photographs of pink and red peonies made over a period of 81 hours as they flowered.

Peonies are herbaceous perennials with impressive, thick, and ruffled blooms. The Peony, or Paeonia, is named after Paeon, who studied with Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine. The root, bark, seed, and flowers have been believed to have anti-inflammatory medicinal properties in eastern Asia and Europe for many hundreds of years. The Chinese call the Peony the King of flowers. It is an auspicious symbol and was recently voted the national flower of China. Peonies are an enduring symbol of wealth, honour, and beauty in Eastern culture and are called Mudan in China.
