A pair of Mute Swans. The name 'mute' derives from them being less vocal than other swan species. The mute swan is one of the heaviest flying birds, growing to 14kg/30lb, or the weight of a medium sized dog. Mute Swans form long-lasting pair bonds and often mate for life. They are known for their ability to grieve for a lost or dead mate. Their reputation for monogamy along with their elegant white plumage has helped establish them as a symbol of love in many cultures.
