The lily family has traditionally represented innocence and purity. Artistic representations date back to ancient Greek and Roman civilizations and have been traced back to the Bronze Age in Crete. The pink varieties are also considered symbolic of prosperity and aspiration. Lilies are mentioned in the Old Testament, and in the New Testament, where they symbolize chastity and virtue. In both the Christian and pagan traditions, the lily has also been a symbol of fertility.
