The national flower of Japan, the cherry blossom represents the end of winter and a time of renewal and optimism. Known as “sakura”, cherry blossoms are renowned as a symbol of good times. The flowers are found in all aspects of Japanese culture, including film, poetry and art. When cherry blossoms are in bloom, people will celebrate, hosting picnic style parties under the trees.
The Japanese contemplate the cherry blossoms every year during a custom called hanami which means “flower viewing.”
Due to their short blooming season, cherry blossoms also symbolise the transience of life, and are linked to Buddhist notions of living in the present moment.
