This image is created from time-lapse photographs of a type of allium, or onion flower, called Black Garlic, made over a period of 326 hours as it flowered.
The scape, or stalk, carries a dense umbellate inflorescence with purple star-like flowers.
The allium flower symbolizes unity, humility, and patience. The Latin root of the word onion, "unio," means one or unity, and the plant was given this name because it grows from a single bulb. Alliums are edible, although only the bulbs and leaves are usually consumed.
